Spring in New York City is something the locals really look forward to every year. As soon as the temperatures start to rise, New Yorkers emerge from their homes and offices, fill the parks, and take to the streets with dogs and strollers. Learn what the natives already know, that there is plenty to enjoy about springtime in New York City.
1. Macy’s Flower Show
The annual spring flower show at the Macy’s department store is always a big hit. Walking through the first floor of Macy’s in Herald Square is like walking through a beautiful (and crowded) garden. The entire floor is adorned with brilliantly colored floral arrangements.
Because the flower show is normally held in early spring, it is one of the first places in the city where you can enjoy the lovely colors of the season. Every year has a unique theme. The store offers free guided tours where you can learn more about the plants that are on display.
2. Easter Parade and Easter Services
If you happen to be in New York City on Easter Sunday, you’re in luck! An Easter Parade is held every year along Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. You can have fun seeing the colorful Easter bonnets and costumes worn by both parade participants and spectators.
If you would like to celebrate the holiday by going to an Easter Sunday Service at one of Midtown’s beautiful churches, the following are located near the parade route:
- St. Peter’s Church (Evangelical Lutheran)
- St. Thomas Church (Episcopal)
- St. Patrick’s Cathedral (Catholic)
3. Lunch in a Park
Eating lunch in a park is a perfect way to take advantage of the warmer weather.
One of the best spots for an outdoor lunch is Bryant Park. This popular patch of grass in Midtown fills up with business people who come down from the surrounding office buildings to take their lunch breaks outside. You won’t have to look far to find food – Bryant Park has eateries right inside the park, plus numerous delis nearby. There are plenty of tables and chairs too.
Other good places to take a mid-day break include Madison Square Park, Washington Square Park, and Battery Park.
4. Tribeca Film Festival
The Tribeca Film Festival is a popular event and a great way to see and support independent films. Tickets can be purchased the same day as the screening, but because of the large numbers of people attending, it’s best to purchase tickets ahead of time from the Tribeca Film Festival website.
Don’t forget to arrive early, even if you do already have tickets. Ticket holders must be at the venue 30 minutes before the film starts to be guaranteed admission.
5. New York Baseball
If baseball is starting, it must be spring. New York City has great baseball. It is home to two major league teams, the New York Yankees and the New York Mets. Baseball is a big part of the city’s past and continues to be an immensely popular sport with a huge fan base.
Besides making for a fun family activity, it’s easy to get to a baseball game. The Mets play in Queens, at Citi Field, and the Yankees play in the Bronx, at Yankee Stadium. Both stadiums are easily accessible by subway and a short trip from Manhattan.
